the longest lens you really need, February 3, 2011 By A. They often have half the weight of the fast telephotos of the same focal length. My previous favorite was the Pentax Tele-Takumar 300mm f6.3 lens, which I use on my Olympus E-P2 in manual focus mode using an adapter. Now I have the M. Zuiko 75-300mm f4.8-6.7. My tests show that it is at least as sharp as my classic Tele-Takumar, and so fast in operation that I now use it as my "walking around" lens.
The E-P2 does a great job steadying the image at full zoom, but 600mm (equiv) really does benefit from using the camera with some additional support. Sometimes I use it with a monopod, but usually I brace the lens against whatever support I can find.
You can use a tripod, but that's not what this lens is for. It exists to be carried, ready for any subject which crops up, or for finding subjects not visible to your naked eye.

First- the not so good. This lens is very slow, but this isn't so surprising considering the amount of technology that needs to go into such a small piece of equipment. Now, the very good- the pictures were impressively sharp. Actually, far better than what I expected. Video taken at full zoom was also excellent. The lens is also light enough that it balances well with the E-PL1. This was one of my biggest concerns and why I didn't just buy an adaptor and use my regular lenses. I find it very difficult to hold a lightweight camera steady with a heavy lens when using an lcd screen instead of an eyepiece. This is why I bought the E-PL1 in the first place vs. other micro cameras or superzooms. If you're looking for a telephoto micro lens, and are willing to give up some speed, this lens is worth buying.
