5.0 out of 5 stars the longest lens you really need, February 3, 2011

I am an aficionado of slow telephoto lenses. They often have half the weight of the fast telephotos of the same focal length. My previous favorite was the Pentax Tele-Takumar 300mm f6.3 lens, which I use on my Olympus E-P2 in manual focus mode using an adapter. Now I have the M. Zuiko 75-300mm f4.8-6.7. My tests show that it is at least as sharp as my classic Tele-Takumar, and so fast in operation that I now use it as my "walking around" lens.

The E-P2 does a great job steadying the image at full zoom, but 600mm (equiv) really does benefit from using the camera with some additional support. Sometimes I use it with a monopod, but usually I brace the lens against whatever support I can find.

You can use a tripod, but that's not what this lens is for. It exists to be carried, ready for any subject which crops up, or for finding subjects not visible to your naked eye.

5.0 out of 5 stars super zoom, January 5, 2011

This is a remarkable lens.It is the equivalent to a 150-600 mm. 35 mm. zoom but weighs less than a pound. At 600 mm. full zoom its maximal aperture is 6.7 slow but easily compensated by increasing iso to 800 which on the ep-2 is relatively noise free.Amazingly sharp pictures may be obtained hand held.I defy anyone to do the same with an equivalent 35 mm.camera zoom which would weigh close to 20 pounds and would be about 14 inches long. This is a superb lens for shootng distant wildlife especially birds.

5.0 out of 5 stars Slow, but Impressive Quality, February 19, 2011

I bought this lens for my my E-PL1 because my dslr gets too heavy on long walks. First- the not so good. This lens is very slow, but this isn't so surprising considering the amount of technology that needs to go into such a small piece of equipment. Now, the very good- the pictures were impressively sharp. Actually, far better than what I expected. Video taken at full zoom was also excellent. The lens is also light enough that it balances well with the E-PL1. This was one of my biggest concerns and why I didn't just buy an adaptor and use my regular lenses. I find it very difficult to hold a lightweight camera steady with a heavy lens when using an lcd screen instead of an eyepiece. This is why I bought the E-PL1 in the first place vs. other micro cameras or superzooms. If you're looking for a telephoto micro lens, and are willing to give up some speed, this lens is worth buying.
